Primary Sources are source of information created at the time. Eg newspapers, photos, letters and quotes. What are Primary Sources?
What are Secondary Sources?
Secondary sources are sources of information created after the time it happened. The author wasn’t there.
When and where did the first fleet arrive?
The first fleet arrived in Sydney Cove in 1788.
Who were the majority of people that were sent to Australia and why were they sent?
Convicts. They were sent here because the gaols were full in England and they were used for labour.
Were the interactions between Europeans and Aboriginals good and why?
No, the interactions were bad.
The Europeans brought new diseases and there were always misunderstandings between the two cultures.
Were there any positive interactions between the Europeans and Aboriginal people?
Yes, the two races as they would share knowledge about things they had and how they found resources.
What did landing in Australia mean for Britain?
It would increase their empire and they’d gain resources.
What kind of people were the first settlers in Australia?
Convicts

What would happen when the free settlers came to Australia?
The free settlers would be given land and the Aboriginal people would be dispossessed of their land and would be referred to as Terra Nullius.
What is dispossession?
Dispossession is forcefully taking possessions or land from native people.
What is Terra Nullius?
Also means ‘no-man’s-land’.
It is when the Aboriginals had no land rights.
What was best about the area the Europeans settled?
The good thing about the area they settled in was that it was very fertile land and was close to water sources.
With all the land to the settlers, what happened to the Aboriginals?
The Europeans spread further out over time pushing the Aboriginal people back further.
What was some of the conflict between the settlers and the Aboriginal people?
Massacres of the Aboriginal people over land and food.
British had a strong belief in European superiority.
Social Darwinism.
Ab’ls believed to be further down on evolutionary scale.
What is Social Darwinism?
Whites are more evolved.
Who were the non-white settlers?
Chinese - there for gold and labour
South Pacific Islanders - there as sugar cane field slaves
Afghans - Cameleers
Japanese - Pearl Divers
How were the non-white settlers treated?
Treated poorly Discriminated against Physically abused Shunned by white society Feared by whites

Deporting all Pacific Islanders home even if they’ve always lived in Australia.

50 word dictation test given to non-white immigrants on purpose to keep them out.

Universal suffrage for European men and women.

Federation was the coming together if separate colonies to form a single nation with a Federal Government.
