Kentucky controlled Ohio river, Missouri could control parts of Mississippi river and major routes to the West, Delaware was close to the key union city of philadelphia.

The confederacy’s plan was to conduct a defensive way until the North gave up. The North’s plan was to use the anaconda plan, blockading the Southern ports and capturing RIchmond, VA.

North-larger population, more resources, and stronger naval power.
