- Introduction
A
- Ask each participant what their favorite emoji is and if they have ever used Procreate before.
- By the end of the session they should (1) know how to use Procreate to draw, (2) understand emoji as a form of communication, and (3) take home a sketch of an emoji they made in the session.
- Mention that emoji are an amazing way to communicate. Today we use emoji in many different ways — to share our mood, express what we like, or to explain where we are or what we are doing, without using words.How do we access emoji on the iphone??
- Connect the iPad to the Video Wall or Forum Display and swipe through the library of emoji within the keyboard to show the vast options of emoji.
- Say, “Emoji have made the way we communicate with each other fun and creative — and sometimes they can mean different things to each of us. Let’s test this out before we start drawing.”

- Emoji Meanings

- Cue the ArtLab_Kids_Emoji_In-Session_Keynote
- Tell the group, “I’m not going to look at the screen, but I will put a random emoji on the display. I want everyone to tell me what the emoji means or represents.”
- Play Slide 1, blank black slide, and turn your back to the group.
- Ask, What does this emoji mean?
- Tap for 😎 Slide 2: Cool, Chill, Ready for the Beach — listen and acknowledge the responses as they are said, agreeing with their interpretation to validate different opinions of the meaning.
- Say, “Wait so we have different responses?”
- Before turning around, ask: “Which emoji are we looking at?” Wait for their responses then turn and say the emoji is the face with sunglasses.
- Say, “Okay. Let’s do this again.”
- Play Slide 3, blank black slide, and turn your back to the group.
- Ask, What does this emoji mean?
- Tap for ⭐️ Slide 4: Star, Special, Good — listen for and acknowledge the responses as they are said, agreeing with their interpretation to validate different opinions of the meaning.
- Say, “Wait, so we have different responses, again?
- Before turning around, ask: “Which emoji are we looking at?” Wait for their responses then turn and state the emoji is the white medium star.
- Say, “OK, let’s try this one last time — maybe this time we will all have the same response? But I couldn’t hear you all very well last time, so I need everyone to be louder.”
- Play Slide 5, blank black slide, and turn your back to the group.
- Ask, What does this emoji mean?
- Tap for 👁 Slide 6: Look, Watching, See, or maybe “I“ — acknowledge the responses as they are said, agreeing with their interpretation to validate different opinions of the meaning.
- Ask, “Which emoji are we looking at?” Turn and acknowledge this is the eye emoji.
- Mention, “This is amazing! We just learned that emoji can mean or say different things. This also shows us how creative we are with how we communicate.”
- Ask, “So, who wants to draw their own emoji?”
- Ask the group, “By a show of hands, does anyone know how to draw?” This question will continue the participation of your audience.
- Say, “Great! Whether we know how to draw or not, I would love to show you all how the Procreate app is used for drawing on iPad.”
Issue an iPad and Apple Pencil to each of the participants.

- Open gallery and select blank Emoji template
- Showcase these tools: Brushes, Eraser, Layers, Color
- The main tools we are going to use to draw an emoji are the Airbrush tools, the Script brush and the mono line brush
- Have audience select script brush or mono line from calligraphy
- Show how to adjust brush size and pinch to zoom
- ”We’re going to getting comfortable with procreate by drawing some simple emoji that represent emotions and feelings.

- Emoji as Emotion (10)

- Instruct your group to tap Gallery in the top left. Have everyone choose the Blank Emoji template.
- Cue Slide 7: Blank Emoji
- Say, “To help everyone get started we created a blank emoji to draw on. We’re gonna draw a happy face”
- Ask, “Can anyone show me what happy looks like?” Ask the audience to “make a face” or express a happy emotion.
- Say, “Great! Freeze! Now let’s draw happy on our blank emoji.” Ask the group to pause or freeze to stay still and observe what happy looks like on their fellow participants.
- Let everyone know, “We have a couple minutes to draw what happy looks like on our emoji, and…go.”
- Walk around and support the audience in choosing tools or techniques.
- Let everyone know when there is 1 minute left to draw.
- Tap the layer with your drawing and uncheck the small box to hide the first drawing.
- Tap the plus symbol in the top right to add another layer on top, then make sure this layer is selected.
- Say, “Great, let’s do this one more time. Can anyone show me what mad looks like?”
- Tell your group, “Perfect, freeze! Now lets draw a mad face emoji. You have a couple minutes…go!”
- Let everyone know when there is 1 minute left to draw.
- Say to everyone, “Everyone is doing great, these emoji looked amazing!”
- Mention, “A great way to understand drawing emotions is to look at the angle of the lines on the face. If the lines point down, the face can look mad or angry; if they angle up, it can look happy or excited.”

- Emoji Message (10)

- Say, “Now, let’s use emoji to say something or communicate a message.”
- Ask, “What does this say?” and cue Slide 8.
- ❤️ + 🎨 = Love Art
- Mention, “You will need two emoji to tell everyone something about yourself.”
- Say, “Feel free to look at all of the emoji that exist, which you can see in the keyboard of the Notes app.”
- Tell everyone, “Once you find two emoji that tell us something about you, draw those two emoji in your canvas.”
- Mention, “We have 10 minutes to draw the emojis that will tell us about you.”
- Let your audience know when they have 1 minute left to draw.
- When completed, ask if anyone would like to share what they made. To save time, select one or two people to share their drawing.
- Ask the artist to give their name before they present their emoji message.
- Thank participants for sharing their message.

- Drawing your own Emoji (15)

- Cue Slide 9, showing many emoji.
- Say, “So now that we have drawn emoji expressing emotion and we’ve drawn emoji to communicate a message, now let’s draw our own emoji.”
- Tell the group, “Let’s make it a unique emoji you’ve never seen before. Like a new animal or a part of nature, or your favorite food or drink. Maybe your emoji is an activity you love, a place to travel, or any object that represents or means something special to you.”
- Mention, “If you need inspiration, feel free to look at any of the emoji on the display.”
- Tell the group, “You’ll have plenty of time to create your unique emoji, 15 minutes, and I’ll be sure to give you an update before we wrap up.”
- Let everyone know, “I’ll also be walking around to help everyone, assisting you with finding tools or using the right technique.”
- Let everyone know when there are 2 minutes left for drawing their custom emoji.
