major work and research Flashcards
Stedman Denslow
Did studies documenting and quantifying muscle, muscle reflex, and autonomic changes in areas of SD termed “osteopathic lesions”. Did “reflex activity in spinal extensors” and utilized EMG/palpation correlation. Documented spinal muscle reflex changes in areas of osteopathic lesions.
William Johnston
did reliability and validity studies in addition to viscerosomatic reflexes.
Louisa Burns
devoted 50 years to osteopathic research, published “pathogenesis of visceral disease from vertebral lesions” in 1948. Director at AT still research institute from 1917-1935. Experimentally induced spinal fixations in animals and then noted effects of these lesions on brain, heart, GI, repro, lungs, and kidneys (somatic-visceral reflex), some viscerosomatic. Research validated by Dr. Wilbur Cole
Irwin Korr:
referred to as the second great philosopher of osteopathic medicine. Added physiological function to AT Stills anatomical foundation. performed studies documenting changes in galvanic skin resistance as result of disturbance in autonomic function, in areas os skin of subjects associated with palpatory findings of SD. Axoplasmic flow and trophic functions of nerves. Facilitation of spinal cord. Sympatheticotonia. Coauthored a paper titled “effects of experimental myofascial insults on cutaneous pattherns of sympathetic activity in man” and “spinal cord as organizer of disease processes: the peripheral autonomic nervous system”
