major threats to Antarctica - climate change Flashcards
what are the 4 major threats?
climate change, fishing and whaling, mineral/recourse exploitation, Tourism and scientific research
what do warmer sea and atmospheric temperatures do?
melt ice sheets
what does the melting of ice sheets cause?
Huge icebergs to calve into the sea - sea levels rise - global flooding
how are plants affected by changes in temperatures?
adapted to the cold - invasive species adapted to higher temps could grow and colonise the environment
how are animals affected by changes in temperatures?
migration patterns be disrupted - and some species (Adelie penguin) decline due to warm - affects the food chain
Where can co2 be stored?
in the ice sheets
bc co2 is stored in ice sheets what does this mean?
causes global temps to rise - enhance global warming
what is the albedo effect?
process of white surface reflecting solar radiation back into the atmosphere
due to less ice sheets what effect is lessened?
albedo effect
what is the affect of less albedo effect?
more heat is absorbed into oceans - rise in ocean temps - enhance effects
