(MAJOR) LABORATORY EQUIPMENT Flashcards
a machine that uses steam under pressure to kill harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores on items that are placed inside a pressure vessel
Autoclave
a container for stirring, mixing and heating liquids commonly used in many laboratories
Beaker
produces a single open gas flame used for heating, sterilization, and combustion
Bunsen burner
used in analytical chemistry for the dispensing of variable, measured amounts of a chemical solution
Burette
used for the separation of fluids, gas or liquid, based on density. Separation is achieved by spinning a vessel containing material at high speed. The centrifugal force pushes heavier materials to the outside of the vessel.
Centrifuge
used for boring holes in corks or rubber stoppers to insert glass tubing
Cork
cup-shaped piece of laboratory equipment used to contain chemical compounds when heated to extremely high temperatures.
Crucible
used to transfer small quantities of liquids; known as Pasteur pipettes
Dropper
used to find accurate measurements of weight.
Electronic balance
the mouth, or opening, is used for pouring solutions and may be closed with a stopper in order to store samples.
Erlenmeyer flask
used to evaporate excess solvents - most commonly water - to produce a concentrated solution or a solid precipitate of the dissolved substance; most are made of porcelain or borosilicate glass
Evaporating dish
used when fingers are too large to grasp small objects or when many objects need to be held at one time while the hands are used to perform a task
Forceps
used to channel liquid or fine-grained substances into containers with a small opening
Funnel
used for measuring volumes of liquids.
Graduated cylinder
attached to a ring stand and is used to support laboratory equipment above the work surface
Iron ring
a vessel in which substances are ground or crushed with a pestle
Mortar and pestle
used to transfer small volumes of liquids in chemical, biological and medical laboratories
Micropipettes
commonly used in chemistry, biology and medicine to transport a measured volume of liquid, often as a media dispenser.
Pipet
used during chemical reactions in labs to hold and support hardware.
Ring stand
forms of protective eyewear that usually enclose or protect the area surrounding the eye in order to prevent particulates, water or chemicals from striking the eyes
Safety goggles
used primarily in chemistry lab settings to transfer solids
Scoopula
used for scraping, transferring, or applying powders and paste like chemicals or treatments
Spatula
hold, mix or heat small quantities of liquid or solid chemicals for assays and qualitative experiments
Test tubes
used to distance a person from potentially dangerous tasks when using chemicals in test tubes
Test tube holder clamps
