-began under thatcher
-Iraqi invasion of Kuwait under Hussain
-UN security council condemned Iraq and imposed sanctions
-Bush and Thatcher sent troops to Saudi Arabia (neighbouring country)
-UN resolution = immediate withdrawal from Kuwait or face military intervention
-they didn’t withdraw, so the attack on Iraqi forces began jan 1991
-28th of Feb = ceasefire announced by Bush

Major’s successes with the Gulf War:

-collaborated well with Bush to come to a resolution
-personally determined to hand it himself, flew to Washington and was keen to support US which was good for the ‘special relationship’
-impressed americans and russians with negotiating style
-broadcast showing support for soldiers showed him to be caring
-he didn’t need to use nuclear weapons
-the decision to not press on into Iraq to remove Hussain was good because it would’ve been illegal as it wasn’t in the UN resolution
