Major Enzymes Flashcards
What is an Oxidoreductase?
catalyzes an oxidation-reduction rxn
b/w two molecules
subclass = Dehydrogenase
What is a Dehydrogenase?
catalyzes a redox reaction involving 2 e- & 1 or 2 H+
between 2 molecules, one of which is
NAD(P)H/NAD(P)+ /FADH2/ FMN
Subclass of Oxidoreductase
What is a Transferase?
catalyzes the transfer of functional groups between molecules
Subclass = Kinase
What is a Kinase?
catalyzes the transfer of a phosphoryl (phosphate) group between two molecules, one of which is ATP
Subclass of Transferase
What is Hydrolase?
catalyzes the transfer of a functional group to H2O
(i.e. XY + H2O -> XOH + YH)
What are Lyases?
catalyze the splitting of 1 molecule into 2 molecules, with nothing else lost or gained (i.e. not hydrolysis or redox).
Subclass = Synthase
What is Synthase?
catalyzes the exact opposite of what a lyase catalyzes.
Synthases catalyze the joining of 2 molecules to make 1 molecule without ATP involvement.
Subclass of Lyase
What is Isomerase?
catalyzes an
internal rearrangement/ isomerization
What is a Synthetase / Ligase?
catalyzes the joining of 2 molecules in a reaction requiring ATP or GTP
What is Decarboxylase?
catalyzes non-oxidative decarboxylation reactions
