Maintaining body temperature Flashcards
What mediates thermal inertia in the body ?
Water
How are called the sensory receptors for temperature ?
Thermoreceptors, the ones located in the skin are called peripheral thermoreceptors, the ones sensitive to cold temperature are more numerous. The ones located in the core are called central thermoreceptors.
From the thermoreceptors, neurons are carrying sensory input into the brain, what is the region of the brain controlling temperature ?
Hypothalamus : in the preoptic nucleus
The motors effect differ if they have to increase or decrease temperature of the body, true or false?
True
What is the hypothalamic set-point ?
The temperature that the hypothalamus considers as “normal”
What is the first thing to happen in the body with a cold environment?
Blood vessels constrict in the skin, resulting in slowing down blood flow in the shell and keeping more blood flow in the core
What is shivering?
Rapid fluctuation in contraction state in your muscles in order to produce ATP and to promote extra heat production
When environmental temperature increases above a level, the blood vessels will dilate to loose extra heat from the body, how do you call this phenomenon ?
Radiation, and if the air is moving ( wind or fan) convection will occure
