mains electricity Flashcards
how does insulation protect the device or user
covering a live wire with a material that wot conduct electricity
how does double insulation protect the device or user
predation making sure the live wire cannot touch the casing, it can also mean that the casing of the object is plastic so even if the wire touches it, it won’t conduct
how does the earth wire protect the device or user
touching the case so that if a current is in the case it will be directed through the earth wire, this will take the earth wire back to earth
how does fuses protect the device or user
sections of wire in the circuit that melt if the current gets too high
how does circuit breakers protect the device or user
they have an electromagnet that is activated if the current goes above a certain limit
why does a resistor result in the electrical transfer of energy
as the resistor slows down the electrons, the kinetic energy that was moving them is transferred into heat energy. This can be used in hairdryers
what is the difference in mains electricity and batteries supplying current
mains electricity is alternating current so can be positive or negative
whereas batteries are direct current so the current is always positive
