forces and movement Flashcards
what is a vector quantity
has magnitude w a specific direction
what is a scalar quantity
has magnitude w no specific direction
what is force
a vector quantity because it has a specific direction
Friction opposing motion
whatever direction the motion is apposing to act friction will always act in the other direction
what is the thinking and stopping distance
the thinking distance is the reaction time of the driver so its the distance that the vehicle moved during the time taken to realise what had happened and for his foot to reach the break pedal
the stopping distance is the distance the vehicle moves whilst trying to get to 0m/s
what are some factors affecting the stopping distance
the higher the speed of the vehicle the longer the stopping distance because it has more speed to decrease past to get to 0m/s
the higher the mass of the vehicle the longer the stopping distance
what are forces acting on a falling object
falling objects increase in speed at they fall cos there weight acting downwards is constantly increasing whereas the air resistance acting downwards stays the same. The terminal velocity is reached when these 2 forces are equal
