Mains Electricity Flashcards
What fm type of circuits are involved in mains electricity what does it stand for
AC - alternating current
What occurs in an AC circuit
The voltage is continuously varying from positive to negative so the current changes direction continuously
How do we calculate amplitude
How many divisions x number of volts per division
How do we calculate time period
Number of divisions in a whole time period (whole wave) x time per division
Time period = 1/ frequency
How do we calculate frequency
1/ time period (in ms)
What is the unit of frequency
Hertz Hz
What do you do to the number to get it to s if each division represents ms
Divide the number by 1000 to get to s
What do you do to the number to get it to s if each division represents Ms
Divide the number by 1,000,000 to get to s
What does the plug casing do
Protects the wiring for safety
What does cable insulator do and what is it made out of
Keeps hold of all the wires
Rubber (electrical insulator)
What does the live wire do
Provides the path for electrical energy to flow
What colour is the live wire and where does it go
Brown, to the right
What does the neutral wire do
Completes the circuit, so the electrons flow back through here
What colour is the neutral wire and where does it go
Blue, to the left
What does the earth wire do
Creates a safe route for the current to flow to the earth with a low resistance
