main linguists Flashcards
1
Q
Behaviourist
A
- Behaviourism- the idea that we are conditioned in how we act, through positive and negative reinforcement
- Skinner:tested rats and pidgeons rewarding them for desirable actions starved pidgeons learned that pressing a red button with their beaks garnered food through positive reinforcement
- Skinner relates this to humans and argues that our actions are gained through postive reinforcement from parents too.
2
Q
Innateness
A
- hypothesis which holds that humans are born with at least some knowledge of linguistic structure
- Chomsky believes we have a LAD which are innate components for understanding language which activates when we are exposed to language
- Parents don’t speak perfect grammatical sentences, child learns a lot more language then exposed to
- virtuous errors highlight that language development is taking place, highlight a child has a general understanding of language rules
3
Q
Cognitivism
A
- need understanding of concepts for language to fully develop
- Piaget argues language and intellect grow in tandem, more understanding of concepts benefits language growth
- up until 11 we are heternomous, at 11 go to formal operation stage
- formal operation stage:form abstract reasoning, engage in debates and moral/ethical thoughts
4
Q
Bruner
A
- CDS is specifically adapted to support CLA
- LASS very helpful as allows framing and scaffolding
- framing: controlling the agenda of a conversation which allows the child to fill in the blanks
- scaffolding:the support and modelling given by children to parents
