Main arterial/venous branches and pulse points Flashcards
Main pulse points in the neck
- Subclavian (medial portion of the supraclavicular fossa)
2. Carotid (anterior neck just below jaw angle)
Subclavian artery becomes axillary artery
Lateral border of the 1st rib
Axillary artery becomes brachial artery
Inferior border of the teres major muscle
Brachial pulse detected
At cubital fossa
- Forms radial and ulnar arteries
Radial pulse detected
On wrist, on thumb side
- More superficial
Femoral artery is a continuation of
External iliac artery
Femoral pulse detected
- Inner thigh
- Mid inguinal point (half way between pubic symphysis and anterior superior iliac spine)
Popliteal artery is a continuation of
Superficial femoral artery
Popliteal pulse detected
Posterior knee (popliteal fossa)
Posterior tibial pulse detected
- Pimenta’s point (near the medial malleolus and the Achilles tendon insertion point)
Posterior tibial route
Gives off fibular
Enters sole of foot inferior to the right malleolus of the ankle
Continues medially down plantar surface (medial and plantar arteries)
Dorsalis pedis is a continuation of
Anterior tibial artery
Dorsalis pedis pulse detected
Dorsum of the foot, between the 1st and 2nd toes
Superficial veins of upper limbs (used for venepuncture and cannulation)
- Cephalic vein
- Basilic vein
- Median cubital
Cephalic vein location and drainage
- Lateral side
- Drains into axillary vein below clavicle
