Where does a gateway sit? Whats the use of a gateway?
Gateways can be on site or sit in the cloud, possibly in a DMZ. If an unsolicited email comes from an untrusted address then the gateway can stop the email being received before it reaches the user.
Email filtering
Examine the traffic. Inbound and outbound emails are scanned with an AV to detect any malicious attachments. Control of phishing attempts by blocking the emails. Automatically sanction spam emails. Include DLP: Block confidential information from being sent.
Identify Spam
Only allow messages from known good locations (whitelist). Block anything that doesn’t follow RFC/SMTP standards.
Identify Spam - Reverse DNS
Block email where senders domain and IP don’t match.
Tarpitting
slow down conversation between your email gateway and senders email gateway.
Recipient filtering
block all emails not addressed to a valid recipient email address.
