Magnification Flashcards
1
Q
Define resolution. What is limited by? What is it measured in?
A
- Ability to distinguish 2 ind objects as sep entities
- Limited by diffraction of light as it passes through specimen and lens
- Measured in pixels
2
Q
Define diffraction. How does this relate to diffreaction?
A
Tendency of light waves to spread around phys obstacles
- Close struct in spec can make reflected light overlap when it diffracts
3
Q
Why do electron microscopes have a higher resolution?
A
Electron beam = shorter wavelength t.f. diffraction won’t blur img
4
Q
What is the formula for magnification?
A
Magnification = image size (mm) / actual size (micrometres)
5
Q
How do we convert:
- cm into mm?
- mm into micrometres?
- micrometres into nanometres?
A
- x 10
- x 1000
- x 1000
