Magnets Flashcards
How do magnets interact with each other?
There are 2 poles, north and south. Opisate poles attract and same poles repel.
What are magnetic materials and what are they?
Magnetic materials are materials that are attracted by magnets.
Iron
Nickel
Cobalt
What does a magnetic field around a bar magnet look like?
The North Pole is attracted to the South Pole.
What is the strongest part of the magnets?
The top of the poles.
How is a compass used to navigate?
A compass has magnets and points at the North Pole (earth is a huge magnet)
How do you make an electro magnet?
You get a magnetic material core and rap a coil of wire around the core in a spiral way then add current in the wire.
What factors change the strength of an electro magnet?
Voltage (current)
Amount of coil of wire
Amount of magnetic material
How do permanent magnets and electromagnets compare?
An electromagnet can be turned on and off.
The strength of an electromagnet can be changed, while the permanent magnet has a fixed strength.
Electromagnets need electricity while permanent donβt.
How does an electric motor work?
The current in the coil is supplied by brushes that make moving contact with the split ring.
