Q

What is the difference between insulators and conductors?

A

Insulators don’t allow heat transfer while conductors do allow heat transfer.

Q

What is the purpose of an insulator?

A

To prevent something from heating.

E.g. A pan handle would be covered in rubber to prevent your hand from burning.

Q

How does the starting temperature of a substance affect the rate of cooling?

A

Different starting temperatures will have different speed to cool depending on the heat that is in.

Q

What is thermal equilibrium

A

When the temperature of an object is the same temperature of its surrounding.
Eg. There is a hot tea in a cold room so the hot tea becomes cold at the same temperature of the room(room temperature) and if the tea is the same temperature as the room then it will stay the same temperature as the room.

Q

How is thermal energy transferred through conduction?

A

When a substance is heated, it’s particles gain energy and vibrate more which make the particles bump into each other, which transfers thermal energy.

Q

What is radiation?

A

All objects transfer thermal energy with radiation. The hotter the object is the more radiation come out of it.
