Magnetism Test Flashcards
What are the building blocks of all matter
Atoms
What is the charges of an atom
Electron (-)
Proton (+)
Neutron (0)
What are the three metals attracted to a magnet
Iron, cobalt and nickel
What metals can be made into magnets
Iron, cobalt and nickel
How many poles does a magnet have
2 poles
What is a magnetic feild
The imaginary lines around the magnet ( In through the south out through the north)
What are the three types of magnets
- Natural – magnetite, type of rock found in the earth
- Permanent – made out of metal, stay magnetized unless hit repeatedly or heated- iron, nickel or cobalt
- Temporary – lose their magnetism very quickly, example electromagnet
Explain a compass
Compass is a magnet free to move
- Has a needle made of iron that points towards magnetic North pole
- Can be used to find directions
what can magnetism be caused by
Magnetism can be caused my moving electrons (electricity)
What is an electromagnet
Electromagnet – using electricity to make a magnet
What are the advantages to an electromagnet
- They can be turned on and off
- You can reverse the polarity
- You can vary their strength
With magnetic poles…..
Likes repel Opposites attract
If you cut a magnet in half what do you get
2 smaller magnets with 2 poles on each
What is a domain
the areas of electrons spinning, in a magnet the domains line up
What is the Van allen’s belt
the energetic charged particles (plasma) around Earth, which is held in place by Earth’s magnetic field
