Magnetism: Magnetic Fields (DONE) Flashcards
What are the four types of magnetic materials?
These materials can be made into a permanent or induced magnet.
The four types of magnetic materials are iron, steel (which is an alloy of iron), cobalt and nickel.
What is the definition of a magnetic field?
A magnetic field is a region around a magnet where a force acts on another magnet or magnetic material
If we place a magnetic material such as iron into the field of a permanent magnet then it will experience a force of attraction towards the magnet.
What type of magnet does the iron become?
The iron becomes an induced magnet and is now attracted to the permanent magnet.
What part of a magnet is the magnetic field strongest at?
A magnetic field is strongest at the poles of a magnet.
How can we find the direction of a magnetic field?
We can find the direction of a magnetic field by using a compass.
How do we know that the earth has its own magnetic field?
We know that the earth has its own magnetic field because if we hold a compass away from any magnets then the needle always points in the north-south direction this tells us the earth has its own magnetic field.
Why does the earth have its own magnetic field?
The earth has its own magnetic field as its core is made out of iron and nickel.
Where does the direction of magnetic field lines ALWAYS point to?
The direction of magnetic field lines will always point to the south.
