magnetism+ elecrtomagnetism Flashcards
two types of poles
north
south
like poles..
repel
unlike poles..
attract
magnetic field =
region around the magnet
strength of field depends on…
distance from magnet
permanent magnets
produce their own magnetic field
induced magnets
become a magnet when placed in a magnetic field
density of the field lines =
flux density
flux density indicates
the strength of the field at that point
higher flux density =
stronger the field and greater the force
compass needle aligns…
with the earths magnetic field
(points north)
-> provides evidence that earth core is magnetic
plotting fields
1) place bar magnet on paper
2) place compass at 1 end
3) mark where point of compass needle is
4) move compass so the rail is at the point that has been marked
5) mark new point where needle is
6) repeat and connect the marks until full field is plotted
when current flows in a conducting wire:
a magnetic field is produced around the wire
direction of field lines depends on
the direction of the current
right hand grip method:
to find direction of field lines
-grip wire in right hand
(thumb pointing in direction of the current)
-fingers curled around the wire will point in the direction field lines should be drawn
