Magnetism Flashcards
Direction of Magnetic Field
Direction of force on a north pole if placed in the field.
Magnetic Fields are produced by…
Electric currents flowing through conductors (electromagnets) and permanent magnets.
Magnetic Field of Earth
Caused by by electric currents inside the molten iron core of the Earth.
Solenoid
Long cylindrical coil that behaves like a bar-magnet. When current flows through the wire the magnetic field inside the solenoid is uniform.
Magnetic Field Strength (or Flux Density)
The force acting per unit current in the wire of unit length when the wire is perpendicular to the magnetic field lines (given in T)
One Ampere
The current in two infinitely long straight wires 1m apart in a vacuum which produces a force of 2x10^-7 N/m on each wire.
