magnetism Flashcards
how is electromagnet formed
when an electrical current is passed through a coil wrapped around a magnetic material ,an electromagnet is formed
what tipe of rock could atract iron
MAGNETITE
what is magnetite named after
magnetite is named after a place called magnesia in Asia
how many years ago did the chinese use rocks with magnetic properties to find direction
4 000 years ago
how did the chinese indecate direction
they would use a small strip of magnetite . they placed this on a piece of wood floating in a bowl of water . the piece of magnetite would turn so that it pointed towards the strongest magnetic area (usually north) . this was usfull for sailors
what is magnetism
magnetism is a physical property of matter. the magnetic property of matter produces a field of ATTRACTIVE FORCES and REPULSIVE FORCES. Magnetism is the force that causes a nail atract to a magnet
what is a magnet
a magnet is a device that produces a field which is the area around a magnet in wich the forces of attraction and repulsion can be felt. some magnet are permanent magnets . this means that the magnet has magnetic properties all the time . a temporary magnet like an electromagnet has magnetic properties when an electric current passed through it
Name 2 types of permanent magnets
- horseshoe
* bar magnet
true or false
a magnet does not atract all substances
TRUE
true or false
a substance atracted by a magnet is a magnticalsubstance
FALSE : a magnetic substance
name a few basic magnetic substanceses
- iron
- nickel
- cobalt
explain magnetic fields
it is a space around the magnet where a pulling force can be felt . the field run from the north pole to the south pole of the magnet .
how do you take care of a magnet
1) do not drop or hit a magnet . magnets are brittle . a magnet could lose its magnetic properties if it is dropped or hit .
2) do not place a magnet near fire
3) do not store magnets with the same pole facing each other. Store magnets with the north pole of one magnet facing the south pole of another magnet
4) when you store a horseshoe magnet place a keeper plate on the end of the magnet to protect the poles
