BRIDGES Flashcards
Why do we need bridges?
Makes it possible to cross obstacles
Help people with trade and transport
Name the different types of Bridges (A B C H)
- Arch Bridge
- Beam Bridge
- Cable Truss Bridge
- Hanging Bridge
What kind of bridge is this en discuss
ARCH BRIDGE:
- Compression push weight away from arch to the side walls
- Romans used this first buildt without cement
- Lots are still standing today
What bridge is this and explain
BEAM BRIDGE:
- Simplest design
- Very strong over short distances, bad for long distances
- Support heavy loads
- Deck of beam bridge is supported by network of triangles, polygon shape
Name and discuss this bridge:
CABLE TRUSS BRIDGE:
- Most interesting bridge
- Cables from centre tower support deck
- Some buildings also buildt like this
- Roadway / vehicles travel either side of tower to spread tension evenly
What bridge is this and discuss
HANGING BRIDGE:
- It hangs from cables thats anchored to ends of bridge
- Towers on bridge support cables
- Cables have immense tention
- Cables support struts/towers, which support the bridge
- Work well for long distances
Explain how you will build a bridge to get across 2 points?
First put down rocks to make a type of beam, then lay down wood planks on top of the rocks.
Which bridge is considered the most interesting design, motivate your answer?
A calble truss bridge.
Because it looks like the deck is floating
Who invented the arch bridge?
The Romans
They buildt it without cement
Why are there different designs of bridges?
Different areas, distances and weight load requires different types of bridges. The type of use will also determine the kind of bridge. A train bridge is diffrent to a vehicle bridge.
