Magnetism Flashcards
In what direction does a magnetic field point?
North to south
What is ferromagnetism?
Materials that have ultple unpaired electrons that tend to create localized regions of magnetic fields inside that material called domains. When placed in an external magnetic field, the domains can grow and merge creating a permanent magnet.
What is paramagnetism?
The magnetic properties of the material tend to align with an external magnetic field, but the resilt is weak and does not enhave to magnetic field very much.
What is diamagnetism?
When placed in a magnetic fieldl, the internal magnetic properties of the material align opposite to the external field cancelling out part of the field. Water and graphite behave this way.
