Fluids Flashcards
Define pressure
The amount of force an object exerts onto a surface per unit of area.
Define atmospheric pressure.
This is the pressure that the atmosphere exerts on everything.
Define gauge pressure.
This is a pressure that uses atmospheric pressure as a zero reference. It is any additional pressure an object experiences on top of (or under) the atmospheric pressure.
Define absolute pressure.
Also called total pressure, it is the sum of the atmospheric pressure and the gauge pressure.
Describe pascals principle.
States that the amount of pressure exerted on an enclosed fluid is experienced equally throughout the entire fluid.
Define density.
The amount of mass per volume of an object.
What is the absolute pressure exerted by a column of fluid?
The pressure at the top of the column plus the gauge pressure.
What is the buoyant force on an object equal to?
The weight of the fluid displaced by that object.
What happens is a force is applied somewhere on a container holding a fluid?
The pressure increases everywhere.
