Magnetism Flashcards
What poles repel and attract?
like poles repel unlike poles attract
What is magnetism?
the force of attraction
What is a compass?
a magnet which is free to rotate.
What is a magnetic field?
The space around a magnet where a magnetic force can be seen
How can magnetic fields be shown?
Using iron filings or plotting compasses.
What direction do magnetic field lines go in?
from the north pole to the south pole of a magnet
What can magnets be made out of?
Iron, steel, cobalt and nickel.
What materials are attracted by magnets.
Iron, nickel, cobalt and steel
Name three uses of magnets
used in compasses
Used for lifting items in scrap yards
fridge doors
write out compass experiment
hurrah
name two instruments you can use to show the magnetic field of something.
plotting compasses and iron filings
Where is the Earth’s magnetic south pole located?
in the geographical north
where is the Earth’s magnetic North pole located?
the geographical south
why does a compasses north pole point north, south pole point south etc.
because the earth’s magnetic south pole is in the geographical north and a compasses north pole is attracted to the earths south pole.
because the earth’s magnetic north pole is in the geographical south and a compasses south pole is attracted to the earth’s north pole.
