Magnetism Flashcards
What is a solenoid?
A coil of wire.
How does the right hand grip rule work and when is it used (wire)?
THUMB = Direction of current
FINGERS = Direction of magnetic field lines.
This is used to determine the direction of magnetic field lines around a wire (when a current is passed through it).
In a coil of wire does the right hand grip rule apply?
Yes, except the fingers represent the current and the thumb represents the magnetic field lines.
To make an electromagnet or magnetic field stronger, we can…
1) Wrap the wire into coils into coils and increase the number of coils.
2) Place it around an iron bar (called the core of the electromagnet).
2a) Use a ‘soft’ iron core.
3) Increase the current.
The further away from the coil or wire we get, the magnetic field lines are…
Weaker and further apart. MAKE SURE TO SHOW THIS ON ALL DIAGRAMS IN THE TEST.
What are some uses of electromagnets?
Scrapyards, everyday electrical items, trains.
