Magnetism Flashcards
what is a magnet?
A substance that exerts a pulling force on attracted materials such as iron, cobalt, nickel and steel (contains iron).
Name two types of magnets.
Permanent magnets and electromagnets.
What is a magnetic field?
The area around a magnet where magnetic forces can be detected.
What are the poles of a magnet?
The ends of a magnet where the magnetic force is strongest; North and South poles.
What happens when you bring together the same poles of two magnets?
They repel each other.
What happens when you bring together opposite poles of two magnets?
They attract each other.
What is an electromagnet?
A type of magnet created by passing an electric current through a coil of wire.
How can you increase the strength of an electromagnet?
-Increase the number of coils
- increase current
-add an iron core
What is a compass?
A device that uses a magnetised needle to show direction.
How can you demagnetise a magnet?
By heating it, hammering it, or placing it in a strong alternating magnetic field.
What is the difference between a temporary and a permanent magnet?
A temporary magnet loses its magnetism quickly, while a permanent magnet retains it for a long time.
What is a solenoid?
A coil of wire that produces a magnetic field when an electric current passes through it.
What type of force is magnetism?
Non-contact
What does magnetic mean?
a substance attracted to a magnet
What does magnetised mean?
something turned into a magnet
Draw a magnetic field
when you’re done, check you answers by finding that shape of a magnetic field sheet in your science book
What is the north pole short for?
north seeking pole
What is the south pole short for?
south seeking pole
