Forces Flashcards
What is a force?
A force is a push or pull that can make an object change its speed, direction, or shape.
What unit is used to measure forces?
Newtons (N)
What is a contact force? Give an example.
A contact force is a force that acts when two objects are touching. An example of this could be thrust, air resistance, water resistance , etc.
What is a non-contact force? Give an example.
A non-contact force acts over a distance, like gravity.
What happens if forces on an object are balanced?
The object remains stationary or moves at a constant speed in a straight line.
What happens if forces on an object are unbalanced?
The object will accelerate, decelerate, change direction, or change shape.
What is the resultant force?
The resultant force is the product effect of all the forces acting on the object
Name a tool used to measure forces.
A newton or a force meter
What is friction?
Friction is a contact force that opposes the motion of an object.
What is air resistance?
Air resistance is a type of friction that acts on objects moving through air.
What does a long arrow in a force diagram represent?
A big force/ a greater force
What does a short arrow in a force diagram represent?
A small force
What is a field in terms of forces?
The area where a non-contact force acts
How to calculate if forces are balanced?
When there is no resultant force
Name all contact forces (6)
. Reaction/Normal
.Friction
.Air resistance
.Water resistance
.Thrust
.Upthrust
Name all non-contact forces (4)
1.Weight (gravity)
2.Magentic
3.Electrostatic
4.Nuclear(there are two types of Nuclear forces strong and weak)
For weight do not mix it up with Gravitational Potential!!
