-Electrical energy to mechanical energy
-Current carrying conductor exerts force on permanent magnet + cuts lines of magnetic force
-The current creates a magnetic field around conductor
-The two magnetics fields interact and give resultant force
Generator effect
-Mechanical energy to electrical energy
-Conductor moves relative to magnetic field
-Potential difference induced
Method of investigation
-Connect materials (wired coil, iron nail, paperclips, ammeter, etc.)
-Support nail in the stand and clamp
-Set variable power supply to 0 and close switch in circuit
-Switch on power supply, gradually increase until one paper clip supported
-Record value
-Repeat for up to 6 paper clips
-Plot graph of number of paperclips against current needed
