Magnetism Flashcards
What is Magnetism?
A non-contact force of attraction or repulsion.
[Also a form of energy]
What causes Magnetism?
The arrangement of electrons in the affected objects
What is the name of the region where the magnetic forces act?
The magnetic field
What are the two types of magnets?
Permanent Magnets and electromagnets
What is the difference between permanent and electro magnets?
Permanent magnets are metals that always have a magnetic field, whilst electromagnets are metals that become temporary magnets when electricity passes through them
What does a magnetic field look like?
Magnetic waves going out from the North pole of the magnet, around the magnet and in through the south pole of the magnet
How does the law of attraction relate to magnetism?
Like poles repel and opposite poles attract,
[for example two north poles of different magnets won’t stick together, but a south pole and a north pole of different magnets will stick together]
Why are metals in electromagnets not always magnetised?
Because metals that are not permanent magnets have the potential of magnetism, but aren’t magnetic due to their arrangement of electrons. [This arrangement is temporarily altered when electricity passes through them, which causes them to magnetise]
