Magnetism Flashcards
Magnetic Forces
Magnetic forces are non-contact and are strongest near the poles
Magnetic Forces and Poles
Like poles repel, opposite poles attract
Field lines
The closer the field lines the stronger the force
Arrows on field lines
The arrows on magnetic field lines point in the direction that a NORTH POLE would experience if placed into the field FROM N TO S
Permanent magnets
Produce their own magnetic fields that are always present
Induced magnets
A material that becomes a magnet when placed in a magnetic field, they only produce attractive forces
Magnetic materials
The force between a magnet and magnetic material is only every attractive
Main magnetic materials
NCIS, Nickel, Cobalt, Iron, Steel
Showing magnetic fields
The presence of a magnetic field can be shown using either iron filings or a magnetic compass
Charging by friction
When two insulating materials are rubbed together, electrons can be transferred from one to the other
