Magnetism Flashcards
What are the 4 magnetic materials?
Iron, steel (Mostly iron), cobalt, nickel.
What is a bar magnet?
A bar magnet is a permanent magnet. This means that its magnetism is there all the time and cannot be turned on or off.
You can make an electromagnet stronger by doing these things:
wrapping the coil around a piece of iron (such as an iron nail)
adding more turns to the coil
increasing the current flowing through the coil
An iron core
Electromagnets have some advantages over permanent magnets. For example:
they can be turned on and off
the strength of the magnetic field can be varied
The arrow on magnetic field lines shows them flowing in which direction?
north to south
What can we use to find the shape of a magnetic field?
A compass can be used to find the shape of a magnetic field.
Where are the field lines most concentrated around a bar magnet?
For a bar magnet, the field lines are most concentrated at both poles.
What is an induced magnet?
An induced magnet is a material that becomes a magnet when it is placed in a magnet field.
What are magnetic fields?
A magnet creates a magnetic field around it. You cannot see a magnetic field, but you can observe its effects.
