Magnetic Fields Flashcards
Magnetic field
A force field surrounding a magnet or current-carrying wire which acts on any other magnet or current-carrying wire placed in the field.
Line of force / Magnetic field line
Line along which a north pole would move in the field.
Motor effect
The effect in which a current-carrying wire placed at a non-zero angle to the lines of force of an external magnetic field experiences a force due to the field which is perpendicular to the wire and to the lines of force.
Magnetic flux density, B
The force per unit length per unit current on a current-carrying conductor at right angles to the magnetic field lines. Unit is the Tesla (T) = 1 N m^-1 A^-1.
Force on a wire in a magnetic field equation
F = BIL
Force on a charged particle moving through a uniform magnetic field
F = BQv
Radius of the path followed by a charged particle in a magnetic field
r = mv/BQ
