A

GI: severe diarrhoea, malabsorption, extensive bowel resection, intestinal fistuale.
Renal: diuretics, alcohol abuse, osmotic diuresis (eg glycosuria in DM)

Why does hypomagnesaemia cause symptoms of hypokalaemia and hypocalcaemia? (2)

A

Hypomagnesaemia causes increased renal loss of potassium and inhibits secretion of PTH causing hypocalcaemia.
