Magnesium Flashcards
What does Mg+ do for the body? Ie the functions
Supports the muscle and nerve function
Transports and stores energy
Maintains blood glucose, neurologic function, ATP formation, fights inflammation, skeletal muscle contraction
What can cause HYPOmagnesemia?
Chronic Alcohol use #1 cause
Renal failure
GI loss: NG or Diarrhea
Diuretics
What are the S/S of HYPOmagnasemia?
Tetany, twitches, parasthesias
Positive Trousseau and Chvosteks signs
Increased DTRs
Laryngeal Stridor
Tachycardia
What are some nursing interventions for HYPOmagnesemia?
Replace Mg+ and Ca+ (IV or PO)
Seizure precautions
Monitor DTRs
Discontinue medications that cause Mg+ loss
Monitor K+ if Mg+ is low
When replacing Mg+ IV slowly can cause increased HR
What can cause HYPERmagnesemia?
Increased Mg+ intake
Decreased renal excretion of Mg+
What are S/S of HYPERmagnesemia?
Low and shallow respirations
Bradycardia
Hypotension
Hypoactive bowel sounds
Drowsiness/ lethargy
Diminished or Absent DTRs
How can the nurse treat HYPERmagnesemia?
Ca+ Gluconate for Mg+ overdose
Diuretics for Mg+ excretion
