Indications
A
- Foreign body airway obstruction AND
- The patient is unconscious and not moving sufficient air AND
- The foreign body cannot be removed under direct vision with a finger sweep

Contraindications
A
Patient is conscious

Success or not success
A
If you can remove the object
- ventilate with BVM
If you cannot see the object
- Don’t use laryngoscope.
- Perform 5 chest compressions to try dislodge object
- Recheck airway as per steps 1-4.
- If unsuccessful start CPR

Potential complications
A
- Gagging or vomiting
- Foreign body may be difficult to remove or in pieces
- Damage to soft tissue of the mouth or teeth

A
ICP for patients with signs of persisting foreign body airway obstruction following initial intervention
