-Lamont Stewarts use of multiple exclemation points show johns outrage that he should be expected to even help Maggie in any way.Despite loving Maggie he doesn’t value the work she does in the house and would feel degraded if he did the same work.
“its because things have aye been rite atween you an me that I can struggle on” Maggie on her relationship with John
-This shows the strength of Maggie and johns relationship and despite what other characters such as lily may think of John, Maggie continues to see the best in him, she doesn’t see him as a burden on her but instead someone that helps her remain levelheaded and calm.

-This emphasises the strict 1930s gender roles that were extremely present in Maggie and johns relationship, despite Maggie being the breadwinner and looking after the home and children Maggie still sees John as the head of the home when in reality he does very little to help the household as a whole for the majority of the play
“you best leave John alane! He does his best for us” Maggie
-Even when her own sister is saying that John cannot provide for his family, Maggie very quickly jumps to his defence despite her being the one who has to do more work to compensate for johns unemployment. Maggie is willing to go above and beyond the usual roles of a 1930s wife to provide for John and their family, Maggie values her relationship with John.
“aye. I still love John. And whits more. He loves me” Maggie
- Maggie chooses to say that she “Still Loves John” this suggests that despite the tough times and difficult stages her and John have been through together they remain a strong couple. she chooses to still remain loyal to him and stay with him. They are presented as a constant throughout the chaos of the play.
