-Maggie reaches her breaking point and can no longer suffer in silence. She acts out of anger and frustration and wants her family to know how much the burden of having to do everything in the home with no help has affected her, she is overworked and her family watch as she suffers.

-The inner conflict that faces John between taking money that could be very helpful and beneficial for his family or saying no because he has too much pride. Johns choice of saying no to the money Jenny is offering creates conflict within the family, John feels he should be the one providing despite him not providing for his family in the previous years.

-This shows that John thinks it’s acceptable to be violent towards his daughter. The conflict building up to this between John and Jenny shows different aspects of John, he feels that he cannot use his words to navigate himself through conflict, he instead has to be violent and overpower Jenny to assert his dominance as head of the house.

-we see John trying to overpower Jenny ion the only way he knows how. He sees violence as the only way he can end this conflict. John is mentally weak but physically strong so he asserts his strength over Jenny .
” A we’ve din wrong is tae be born intae poverty!”
- John blames Jenny for leaving due to uncontrollable factors but it was also her family around her and the containment she felt. Although Jenny voices the reasons why she left John is still unwilling to hear any criticisms Jenny may have, he isn unwilling to accept that Jenny wants to leave home.
