Define ‘Masthead’
This is usually at the top of the page and is the placement for the name of the magazine. It is instantly recognisable to the audience as a brand image.
Define ‘Tag line’
A catchy phrase that represents the brand identity of editorial philosophy.
Define ‘Slogan’
A catchy phrase that represents the product and helps it to stand out against rival products.
Define ‘Date line’
The line for the date of the magazine.
Define ‘Main cover line’
The main image on the magazine, it is usually connected to the feature article and appeals to the audience.
Define ‘Cover lines’
Short, catchy phrases referencing content inside the magazine and helping persuade the reader to buy.
Define ‘Colour palette’
Usually made up of no more than three colours that contrast but complement one another.
Define ‘Barcode’
The placement of the barcode used to purchase the product.
Define ‘Price line’
The placement of the price.
Define ‘Composition and layout’
The way in which all the elements on the cover are organised; how text, images and shapes are positioned on the page.
Define ‘Typography’
The style and size of font used indicates its relevance
Define ‘Mode of address and language’
The way the magazine ‘talks’ to the audience will depend on the genre of the magazine and who the target audience is.
Define ‘Shot types and angles’
The central image is usually a long or mid shot.
Define ‘Strapline’
Bands or line that go at the top and/or bottom of the page, usually filled with text.
Define ‘Puff’
A shape, usually in contrasting colour, that attracts the reader’s eye.
