Macrovascular complications of diabetes Flashcards
What leads to atheroma?
Small accumulations of extracellular lipid
What sort of disease causes people with diabetes to die?
Macrovascular- causes mortality and morbidity whereas microvascular just causes morbidity
What is the Framingham risk score?
Gender-specific algorithm used to estimate the 10-year cardiovascular risk of an individual
What ethnicity has an increased risk of coronary heart disease?
South Asians
What is the major cause of morbidity and mortality in diabetes?
Ischaemic heart disease
What are the other major forms of macrovascular disease?
Cerebrovascular disease
Peripheral vascular disease
Renal artery stenosis
How does intensive glucose treatment affect the risk of cardiovascular disease?
Not significantly- it does improve CHD risk but doesn’t change much in terms of mortality
How do you manage macrovascular disease?
Aggressive management of risk factors (bp and cholesterol): Dyslipidaemia High blood pressure Smoking Diabetes
What specific treatment significantly reduces macrovascular disease risk?
Statins
