Macronutrients Flashcards
What are the 6 major classses of nutrients in food?
Carbohydrates, Protein, Fat, Vitamins, Minerals, Water.
What are organic and inorganic compounds?
Organic Compounds - protein, carbs, lipids and vitamins.
Inorganic Compounds - minerals and water.
Energy - Kilojoules to Kilocalories.
4.2kJ = 1kCal
kJ and kCal values of energy nutrients.
Carbs - 17kJ/g, 4kCal/g
Protein - 17kJ/g, 4kCal/g
Fat - 37kJ/g, 9kCal/g
What’s a carbohydrate?
Glucose, provides nearly all of the energy the human brain uses daily.
Primary roles of carbs is to provide glucose for energy.
Stored as glycogen.
What are monosaccharides?
They are single sugars.
Glucose, fructose and galactose.
What are disaccharides?
They are pairs of monosaccharides.
Maltose (glucose + glucose)
Sucrose (glucose + fructose)
Lactose (glucose + galactose)
What are comlpex carbohydrates?
Oligosaccharides or polysaccharides, multiple sugars linked in long or branched chains.
Glycogen and starch are examples.
