macromolecules Flashcards
What are the 4 macromolecules
carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids
what are carbohydrates
Organic compounds with Elements Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen (CHO) in a 1:2:1 ratio. Function: primary short-term energy source.
Monomer of carbohydrates?
Monosaccharides– they are simple sugars, the building block monomer of carbs. Ex. glucose, fructose.
What are Disaccharides
Disaccharides are 2 monosaccarides. ex. sucrose, maltose, lactose
What are Polysaccharides
carb polymer created from long chains of monosaccharides, stored as glycogen in animals and as starch in plants. It is also cellulose in cell walls
What are Proteins?
An organic compound with Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Nitrogen (CHON) - many functions: biochemical control, structure, transport, enzymes which speed up chemical reactions
What are amino acids
They are the monomer or building block of proteins. There are 20 different ones, linked in different orders to form many proteins. They are linked by peptide bonds. polypeptides are formed which then form proteins.
What are lipids?
organic compounds with Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen (CHO), there is no ratio. functions are long term energy storage, hormones, cell membrane composition, waterproofing, waxes oils fats
Monomers of lipids?
fatty acids and glycerol
what r nucleic acids
organic compounds with Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, and Phosphorous (CHONP), functions in the genetic information, DNA and RNA,
monomer of nucleic acids?
nucleotides (5-carbon sugar, Nitrogen base, and a Phosphate group)
