Macromolecules Flashcards
What is a carbon-carbon bond?
It is a chemical bond between two carbon atoms with a glucose molecule.
Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are organic molecules composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, serving as the body’s primary source of energy by breaking down into glucose, a simple sugar that cells use for fuel.
Lipids
Lipids are biological molecules that do not dissolve in water.
Fatty acids are one of the components that are in lipids.
Lipids provide more calories than carbohydrates, so they are a better energy source.
Proteins
Proteins are complex molecules composed of monomers which are called Amino acids.
Amino acids are unique. Not only do they have Nitrogen but they also have an R group (side chain)
Digestion
Digestion is the process of breaking down complex food molecules into smaller, simpler components that can be absorbed by the body.
Synthesis
Synthesis is the process of building larger, more complex molecules from smaller subunits, essentially creating new compounds within the organism.
Nucleic Acids
Macromolecules that are crucial in all cells and viruses. They are composed of nucleotides, which are the monomer components. Nucleic acids also contain nitrogen.
The two main classes of nucleic acids are deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic (RNA)
