Macromolecule Flashcards
Macromoecule
a very large molecule important to biological processes
Organic
nvolving organisms or the products of their life processes
Monomer
a molecule of any of a class of compounds, mostly organic, that can react with other molecules to form very large molecules, or polymers
Polymer
a substance composed of molecules with a large molecular mass of repeating structural units or monomers connected by covalent chemical bonds
Carbohydrates
organic compounds abundant in nature, serving as structural and functional components of cells.
Lipids
fatty, waxy, or oily compounds that are soluble in organic solvents and insoluble in polar solvents such as water
Fatty acids
the building blocks of the fat in our bodies and in the food we eat.
Protein
A molecule made up of amino acids
Amino acids
small molecules that are the building blocks of proteins.
Enzymes
a biological catalyst and is almost always a protein.
Catalyst
a substance that speeds up a chemical reaction, or lowers the temperature or pressure needed to start one, without itself being consumed during the reaction.
Nucleic Acids
large biomolecules that play essential roles in all cells and viruses.
Nucleotide
the basic building block of nucleic acids (RNA and DNA)
Hormone
chemical substances that act like messenger molecules in the body.
Steroids
Any of a group of lipids (fats) that have a certain chemical structure.
Dehydration synthesis
the creation of larger molecules from smaller monomers where a water molecule is released.
Hydrolysis
a chemical reaction in which a chemical compound is broken down by reaction with water.
