Macrocytic/ Normochromic Flashcards
What is Megaloblastic anemia?
A large uncleared, abnormal red blood cell.
Name 2 types of macrocytic anemias
Megaloblastic and nonmegaloblastic
What is nonmegaloblastic anemia?
Macrocytes are still produced however the bone marrow NRBCs do not demonstrate the megaloblastic maturation changes
What are 2 common causes of Megaloblastic anemia?
Vitamin B12 and Folate deficiencies
What causes nonmegaloblastic macrocytic anemias
Seen in patients with chronic liver disease, chronic hemolytic anemia and other types of anemia
What’s another name for Vitb12 deficiency?
Cobalamin
Name 4 causes of vitb12 deficiency
Pernicious anemia, gastrectomy, diphyllobothrium Latum, dietary deficiency of b12
What is Pernicious anemia?
a lack of vitb12 absorption due to a lack of function Intrinsic Factor.
What is Gastrectomy?
Is the removal of part or all of the stomach which also eliminates the intrinsic factor secreting cells
What is intrinsic factor?
A transport protein for vitb12 which is produced by the gastric parietal cells.
What is diphyllobothrium latum?
A Fish tape worm carried in the ileum and the absorption of b12 is blocked
What is folate acid?
Folic acid is a member of the vitamin B complex and found in green leafy veggies, liver, meats and some fruits.
Name 4 causes of folate deficiency ?
poor diet, increased need ( folic acid ), chronic hemolysis , non Megaloblastic anemia
What is Ileum?
The lower 3/5 of the small intestine
What is pancytopenia?
A decrease in all blood cell types
