Machines as Persons Flashcards
Arguments for: Explain the Turing test.
Created by Alan Turing. it was designed to discover if machines could be minded and pass as a human.
Arguments for: What was PARRY?
A program developed by Kenneth Colby to try and successfully pass the Turing test. It portrayed a Paranoid patient who was convinced the mafia were after him.
Arguments Against: What was Dennet’s criticism of the Turing test?
It wasn’t sufficient to test weather or not a machine was as complex as human. Machines also nearly always faulted on emotional questions.
Arguments Against: What was Dennet’s criticism of PARRY?
PARRY was only successful because he was a paranoid patient, meaning any answers that would have normally seemed odd, were taken as normal. I.E. response to emotional questions.
Arguments Against: The problem of Qualia.
Machines lack qaulia; the raw feel and qualitative understanding of a feeling.
Arguments Against: The problem of Internationality.
Machines do not know what they are doing, they are only doing it because they are programmed to. Chinese room.
