Machines and mechanisms Flashcards
What is energy?
The ability to do work
What is the formula for work?
- make sure you know the formula!
Work=(force)(distance)
What is the formula for force?
- Make sure you know the formula!
Force=(mass)(acceleration)
List three examples of different types of energy.
Mechanical energy, thermal energy, and chemical energy.
Would you use a longer or shorter ramp to move something heavy up one meter?
You would want to use a longer ramp
What is energy measured in?
Joules
If you can not lift a heavy object to a raised surface, have you accomplished any work?
No, you have not accomplished work since you haven’t moved your object anywhere.
What device would you use to move something heavy up onto a table, or onto the back of the truck?
You would use a ramp.
You you can’t lift a heavy metal block on to the table where you you want it, have you done any work, and have you used energy?
If you did not accomplish what you had intended to accomplish, then you have not successfully done any work. While lifting the object you have used energy.
What is the formula for energy?
Work output divided by work input, times one hundred.
What is mechanical advantage?
The ability for a machine to multiply the force used upon it.
What is the mechanical advantage (MA)energy formula?
Mechanical advantage (MA)= Force output divided by Force input.
What does rise and run mean?
Rise= The vertical side of the triangle Run= The horizontal side of a triangle
What are some NON examples of energy?
Things that do not move, and things may not be living and are not energy but they may contain energy.
What is a fixed pulley?
A pulley that is attached to something unmovable
What is a movable pulley
A pulley that is not fixed to anything that is unmovable
Where is the fulcrum located in a class one lever?
Directly in the center of the lever like a see saw
Where is the fulcrum and load on a class two lever?
They are both on the same side of the lever, generally on top of each other
What is potential energy ?
Energy stored in an object that with motion will turn into kinetic energy
What is kinetic energy
Energy that an object has because of motion
Efficiency formula
Energy used by a machine to do its job
——–——-——-——-——-——-——- times 100
Energy given to machine to do it’s job
What is a block and tackle? And what does it do?
A block and tackle is a mechanism consisting of ropes and pulleys that are strung together to lift heavy objects without having to use as much force.
Do hydraulics use air or a type of liquid?
Hydraulics use a liquid to work, usually a grease
Do pneumatics use air or a type of liquid as power
Pneumatics use air as power
