Maximum Ordinate
Highest point of bullet trajectory between muzzle and target- about 2/3 distance from weapon to target
Cone of fire
How each round follows a slightly different trajectory, creating a cross sectional area where rounds travel
Beaten zone and how it changes w/ range and slope
Elliptical pattern formed on the ground by striking rounds
Short range/Downward slope- lengthens
Long range/Upward slope- shortens
Danger space
Space between gun and target where rounds rise less than 1.8 meters above ground
Grazing fire
Where the center of the cone of fire rises less than 1 meter above ground
Plunging fire
When the danger space occurs exclusively within the beaten zone; when firing at long ranges or on sloping terrain
Frontal fire
When the long axis of the beaten zone is at a right angle to the front of the target
Flanking fire
Firing at the side of a target
Oblique fire
When the long axis of the beaten zone is at an angle other than perpendicular to the front of the target
Enfilade fire
When the long axis of the beaten zone coincides with the long axis of the target, can be frontal or flanking
Fixed fire
Where depth and width of beaten zone covers the target- one aiming point
Traversing fire
Changing direction left or right
Searching fire
Changing elevation- firing further or closer
Traversing and searching fire
Changing direction and elevation
Free gun
Rapid changes in direction and elevation- not accomplished w/ T&E
Sector of fire
Target area
Final Protective Fire- FPF
Immediately available, prearranged barrier of fire- prevents enemy movement across defensive lines
Final Protective Line- FPL
Predetermined line along which grazing fire is placed to stop an enemy assault- gun sights along FPL unless engaging other targets- part of unit FPF
Primary Direction of Fire- PDF
Main direction of fire
If an FPL is not given, becomes part of FPF
M192 Tripod traverse
900 mils (50.6 degrees)
